Extreme fishing meets Hungry Hungry Hippopotas, was how this competition had been sold to him. [break][break]

How could he refuse? [break][break]

Beneath the small motorboat that Angelo manoeuvres through gentle ocean waves, are hundreds of wiggling red blobs, swimming in a clumsy school under the surface. Magikarp. Somewhere, hidden within all those squirming scales, are flashes of tempting gold.[break][break]

The competition was simple: catch as many Golden Magikarp as they could. Battling, each other or the fish, was encouraged. [break][break]

“Here we are. Hope you're ready for payback after what you pulled at Razz's birthday.” He says without real threat to his passenger, competitor and former haunted house ghost.[break][break]

Nesaea, who’d been sat beside him at the stern as they’d chugged into the centre of the netted enclosure, leaps into the water with a graceful splash; mermaid tail disappearing into the depths.[break][break]

“Your lifejacket’s cute, by the way.” He tells her as he kills the engine, sincerity diluted by the amused smile that pulls wryly at the corner of his mouth.

Quietly tugging at the fringes of her lifejacket, Eris doesn't quite hold back in showing her displeasure, sticking her tongue out at the squishy cartoon psyducks decorating its surface and pouting at her Luxray. Each time she wants to lean over the edge to catch a glimpse of the ocean life beneath the surface, he's there to pull her back, his ears twitching to the rhythm of the engine's throttle as he gives her a stern look.

"You should have seen your faces! If only Razz had been there!" Of course, even her anger doesn't last long in the face of hilarity, a mischievous grin decorating her lips as she tilts her head at the captain. "I don't need this lifejacket though! It's so... flashy... and bulky and uncomfy!" The feelings return as soon as she's reminded of her predicament, a hand reaching into her pockets as she tosses it up into the air. In a flash, a Chinchou appears and dives into the water with a grand splash, blubbing excitedly as he circles the Vaporeon.

"I'm a decent swimmer! Plus, Reiner would probably rather wait for the skies to break this boat than let me fall off by accident."

“You won’t be saying that when the Magikarp fly out of the ocean an’ try dragging you into the deep,” he peers slyly from the corner of his gaze, teasing with an ominous (if not slightly overexaggerating) tone as he suddenly pats Eris on the back of her squishy preserver. Like one of the fearsome fish had just swooped in to take a bite. [break][break]

He’s used to teasing younger siblings about as much as trying to convince them to do something boring and responsible. [break][break]

“You didn't know Magikarp only evolve after eating twenty little kids? Don't think Reiner wants to see you become fish food.”[break][break]

Angelo does, however, opt to sit beside Eris so that she can look over the edge of the boat without the Luxray having a panic attack. They’d need to so they could direct their pokemon, after all. [break][break]

“Ready to make them our dinner instead, kiddo?” [break][break]

Go!! [break][break]

As the match begins beneath the waves, ACID ARMOR coats Nesaea’s scales, rendering her invisible as she swims into the school of Magikarp undetected. Jaws parted to snatch one of them for Team Angelo.

With the Vaporean snatching up a magikarp for her team, Eris whistles without the slightest intent of backing down. Though the light may be feeble, Chiya glows with a soft Spark, lurking deep within the waters and luring the Magikarp closer.

The kid’s certainty – her innocence – brings a faint, soft smile to his lips; Eris reminding Angelo of a collection of spirited siblings left behind at home. Unlike the girl sat beside him in the motorboat however, his family were not wrapped up in Hoenn’s turbulent, uncertain climate. That silver lining was a bitter pill to swallow however when the troublemaker cheerfully shouts at the Magikarp without, seemingly, a care in the world. [break][break]

“Keep threatening them like that and I bet they’ll swim into your basket by themselves,” he grins, reaching out a hand to clumsily ruffle a head of pale hair. “You fight many fish, Eris? Kyogre better watch itself.” [break][break]

Beneath the waves, Nesaea cunningly plays the part of a COPYCAT, mimicking the Chinchou’s SPARK towards her opponent. Attempting to ward it away from the Magikarp she sliced through the water to snatch.

Those were the good days, carefree and seemingly never-ending. As her eyes scour the water for movement, her fists clench at the memories that begin to well up. But she isn't quite distracted enough to miss the sly move that the Vaporeon tries to pull, giving two whistles.

As Nesaea approaches, Chiya takes the Spark without so much as a flinch, striking back with a Confuse Ray as he continues to herd the Magikarp.

“Oh yeah?” Angelo raises a brow, feeling like he’s missing something in the story. Surely Eris and her parents didn’t really run into the ocean to punch Magikarp in the face, right? “Sounds like fun.”[break][break]

Ocean blue eyes turn back to the waves. “We get Magikarp in the canals back in Alto Mare, too. Gyarados? Not so much. Rivers are too narrow there, if they evolved in the city they’d get sandwiched Real pain in the…” He pauses, remembering himself. “Butt.”[break][break]

Her previous attempt failing, both against the Chinchou and in catching the Magikarp, Nesaea determinedly prowls the perimeter of the school. Muscles poised, the predator fires an AURORA BEAM towards the edge of the clump of fish, separating a couple from the safety of the group. [break][break]

“Never punched them, though. You think I’m missing out?”

The more she listens to Angelo, the more she's fascinated by his origins, running through memories of world maps as she tries to remember Alto Mare. Canals... Water... The city of water?

"You're from Johto? Must have been quite a journey to end up here! But yeah, Momma used to be the one that would completely beat a Gyarados and walk away unscathed! She always said it was necessary training for when we went to pursue the trails of legendary when I got older..."

But that's just a promise of the past now, isn't it?

Eris falls silent, steeling her gaze as she watches for Chiya's luminescence beneath the waters. Reiner, on the other hand, seems concerned but doesn't do anything more than simply nudge himself closer to the child.

"You're not really missing out on anything, I think. Most people get scared just running into a Gyarados in open waters just because of how dangerous it might be."

With Nesaea successfully thwarted, Chiya begins to mess with her a little by blowing a Beam of Bubbles towards the Magikarp she's separating, hopefully redirecting them towards him and into the basket.

Eris’s story is only interrupted by the sound of the waves sloshing gently against their little motorboat, Angelo silent as he listens. Engrossed by curiosity, amusement and a pinch of disbelief for the small family that had apparently wrestled Gyarados in their spare time. [break][break]

“Remind me to not introduce you to Volans. I don’t need him scared of the under three-foot club,” his lips quirk into a teasing grin. His Gyarados would be fine but there’s something about Eris that makes him feel that its entirely feasible for her to try and take a swing at him. [break][break]

“I like the sound of your mum – Oh, you see that?” [break][break]

Words cutting off, he leans a little more over the edge of the boat, gesturing the Eris to look with him. A hand hovers close to the back of her lifejacket, if only for Reiner’s comfort, to ensure he could snatch hold if the young girl decided to perform a Twist Dive into the ocean. [break][break]

Down below, something glitters gold. [break][break]

Beneath the waves, Nesaea sprays a film of HAZE towards her Chinchou opponent, lunging for the Magikarp that it had disturbed.

She doesn't quite know if it's true, but she'll assume so until proven otherwise. Instead, she commits the name to heart, waiting for the day she can one day throw hands at Angelo's Gyarados.

But as soon as Angelo draws attention to the strange object lurking beneath, Eris casts the thought to the back of her mind, perking up as she leans dangerously over the edge of the boat. Her eyes gleam bright with excitement, her Luxray yowling softly as he holds on tighter to her.

As Nesaea lunges for the Magikarp, Chiya aims a Confuse Ray into the school of fishes, hoping to catch out a few more of her own.

“That or a Pikachu’s looking to start a new aquatic life,” he responds, both of them peering down into the deep to try and spot the elusive shiny Magikarp. Both Alto Marean and Luxray holding onto Eris to make sure she doesn’t join the fish in the deep. Although, by her stories, Angelo thinks maybe the school of Magikarp would be worse off. [break][break]

“C’mon Nesa, don’t let that one escape,” Angelo calls down, fingertips reaching out to splash on the surface of the water to catch the Vaporeon’s attention. A playfully competitive grin on his lips. “Show these Slowpokes who the best Magikarp battler really is.” [break][break]

Heeding her trainer’s call, Nesaea catches her attention on a flash of gold within the mass of orange. Once more, she turns invisible, melting into the sparkling waves with ACID ARMOR. Taking the stealthy approach as she swims towards the skittish sushi-to-be.

With one final tug, Reiner succeeds in pulling Eris back to safety, this time warning her with a light slap on with wrist with his tail. She merely responds with sticking out her tongue, booping his snoot before turning her attention back to the waters.

Taking in a deep breath, she places her fingers against her lips, whistling as loudly as she can. Down below, the Magikarp seem a little skittish but remain oblivious to the fate that awaits them. A Hydro Pump is used to influence the underwater currents, pushing them in different directions and beginning to break the outer rings of the school.

Turns out Eris is true to her stories, looking like the superior Magikarp brawler. Squinting as he peers down into the watery depths, Angelo thinks he can make out more wiggling forms in the young girl’s basket however with the waves playful distortion and the fish unable to stay still, it was hard to tell. [break][break]

He might have a chance yet… There was still that elusive golden prize still swimming around, after all. [break][break]

“Think I’m winning,” he lies with a grin, elbow bumping out towards Eris. Encouraging her fighting spirit. [break][break]

Underwater Nesaea huffs, bubbles escaping her jaws in frustration. Fed up with taking the tactical approach, she fires an AURORA BEAM towards her slippery prey.
